Uber Launches Women-Only Driver Programme to Boost Safety and Earning Opportunities
A new initiative aims to remove barriers for women wanting to join the Uber ride-hailing platform.
Uber has rolled out an ambitious new “Women Drivers Program” designed to create safer, more flexible earning opportunities for women in our community. The initiative addresses common concerns that have prevented many women from joining the platform, including vehicle access, safety worries, and licensing challenges.
“We want to change the narrative where women feel they can’t afford Uber rides or face obstacles in joining our platform,” Uber explained in announcing the programme. “Whether the Uber platform is a way to create income or fund a dream – we’ll help you get there.”
Key Features for Women Drivers
Don’t own a car? No problem. Uber will connect interested drivers with Fleet Partners who rent vehicles, removing one of the biggest barriers to getting started.
The programme emphasises flexibility, allowing women to work around family commitments and personal schedules while earning income when it suits them.
Safety remains a top priority with several new features:
• Women Rider Preference: Drivers can choose to only receive ride requests from women passengers
• In-app emergency assistance available 24/7
• ‘Follow My Ride’ tracking service
• Free Partner Protection insurance through Allianz (available in selected European countries)
Since October 2022, Uber has been hosting monthly women-led events where drivers can connect, share experiences, and exchange tips. The programme also includes dedicated women-only communities within the app.
Women who refer other women to the platform can earn additional bonuses on top of standard referral rewards.
The Women Rider Preference feature is currently available in South Africa, along with several other countries including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, and various European nations. The list is updated regularly as the programme expands.
Uber promises more announcements related to the Women Drivers Programme in the coming months, suggesting additional features and support measures are in development.
For local women considering flexible earning opportunities or those looking for safer ride-hailing options, this programme represents a significant step toward addressing long-standing concerns in the industry.
