Kensington and Maitland could soon have their own Lions Club. A meeting to establish the club will be held at St John’s Primary School in Kensington on Monday 20 April at 17:30.
Lions Clubs International is the world’s largest service organisation, with more than 1.4 million members in over 46 000 clubs across 200 countries.
The organisation is dedicated to community service and leads humanitarian projects.
Heather Lee, a global extension team member for Lions Clubs International, said there is a need to establish a club in Ward 56, which includes Kensington, Factreton and Maitland.
“There isn’t a Lion’s Club in or close to the Kensington area. We will service Kensington, Factreton, Garden Village and Maitland.
“It will be better if we have a club in Kensington so that we can reach out and serve more people.”
Lee explained that Monday’s meeting will be an introduction to the Lions Club, giving residents an opportunity to learn more about its community service work and how they can get involved in establishing a local branch.
She said this will be followed by another meeting, after which the process of formally establishing the club will begin.
According to Lee, anyone above the age of 18 years can become a lion member.
“There’s something deeply fulfilling about serving others. Many Lions say it strengthens their sense of purpose and even aligns with their personal values and faith.
“And you meet people from all over the world because you are part of 1.4 million members.”
She explained that Lions Club focuses on key service areas including vision care, hunger relief, diabetes awareness, humanitarian efforts, environmental protection, youth development and disaster relief.
Lee said through these initiatives, members work to support vulnerable communities, improve wellbeing and promote humanitarian service locally and globally.
According to Lee the club will be beneficial to the community as it will enhance and support the work already done by existing organisations and community initiatives.
“Lions is a service organisation. The objective of Lions Club is to serve and to give back to the community. We don’t look at religion or politics. We just want to make a difference in someone else’s life.”
Lee said joining the organisation also opens opportunities for personal development and recognition within the club.
“Once you become a member, you can do online courses on anything free-of-charge. When we charter a new club, the names of the members will be engraved on the charter.”
