Pinelands CID has re-emphasised leash regulations for dogs on leads along the suburb’s canal, as bicycle and vehicle patrols continue to roll out under its public-safety operations.

In a recent post on social media, the CID urged residents: “Keep your dog safe, always use a leash, protect your pup and others around you,” highlighting the responsibility of pet owners in public spaces and the importance of keeping dogs on leads.

The reminders come as enforcement of the City of Cape Town animal keeping by-law continues. Under the by-law, public places, including canals and walkways, may be designated as “on-leash, free-running or off-limits.” Unless signage explicitly permits free-running, dogs must be on leads.

The CID’s renewed emphasis on leash laws follows growing concern about public safety and environmental protection. Canal-side walkways are shared by families, children and local wildlife. Uncontrolled dogs not only pose a risk to people, but may disturb sensitive species and degrade community spaces, making it crucial to have dogs on leads.

Local residents have welcomed the reminder. Patrick A Leonard commented: “Time to enforce it on the various fields in Pinelands, including the lower oval. Nowhere in Pinelands is off-lead.” Joe Strumpher added: “Train your dogs, end of story.”

Residents are encouraged to respect signage and by-laws when walking their pets. The CID says compliance will help keep Pinelands “safe, clean and green.”
