The iBali Photography Collective hopes to shed light on local community voices who are telling their own stories through their cameras.
The Collective is set to launch the Ocean View Photography Club Exhibition on Thursday 30 July, from 09:00 to 11:00, at the Ocean View Library, Carina Close, Ocean View.
Community voices
The event marks a significant milestone in a year-long journey of mentorship, creativity and community storytelling.
Founded by social documentary photographer Dave Fisher, the iBali Photography Collective was established alongside Earl Mentor under the banner of LENS, a registered non-profit company.
Their shared vision aims to cultivate visual storytellers from within the Ocean View community – young people equipped with both the skills and the confidence to narrate untold stories and shift perspectives through the power of photography.
Over the past year, Fisher has worked closely with a group of aspiring young photographers, guiding them through technical foundations, creative development and the deeper purpose of photography as a vehicle for personal expression and community transformation.
Untold stories
“We launched the iBali Photography Collective in Ocean View as a way to cultivate visual storytellers within the community who can then narrate untold stories and shift perspectives through the power of images,” said Fisher.
Participants are equipped with photography skills and creative tools that empower them to celebrate identity, challenge injustice and amplify voices that inspire positive change, he added.
This upcoming exhibition is not the collective’s first.
An initial showcase was held at the Simonstown Museum at the end of last year, drawing attention to the power and potential of the programme.
The move to the Ocean View Library is intentional – bringing the work back into the heart of the community it reflects and creating space for meaningful dialogue about the issues the photographs address.
“Most of the photographers will be at the event to present their work, explain the motivation behind it, answer questions and discuss their community of Ocean View with visitors to the exhibition,” he added.
The long-term ambition of the initiative is to build a sustainable legacy programme that preserves and amplifies the Ocean View narrative for wider audiences, ensuring that local voices are not only heard, but celebrated.
Community members, partners and supporters are invited to attend and share in this celebration of emerging talent.
