Residents in Pinelands were reminded that road safety and community protection requires joint effort during Operation Shanela II. This was a targeted safety roadblock held on Tuesday 17 February.

The two-hour operation, from 10:00 until noon, saw 91 vehicles checked and 100 people screened. As a result, there were 32 fines totalling R41 000.

The roadblock was set up on Jan Smuts Drive, identified by the police as a hotspot for traffic violations.

“The operation reinforces that safety is a shared responsibility. Effective results are achieved when residents, law enforcement, and community structures work together,” said Lt Col Darleen Koopman, Pinelands Police Station commander.

Alongside enforcement, organisers focused on prevention through awareness.

Volunteers and officers distributed 250 pamphlets covering safe driving, domestic violence support, and safety tips for vulnerable groups.

A team effort

Operation Shanela II involved an integrated deployment of the police, Metro Police, law enforcement, and ADT. In addition, local community partners participated, including the Pinelands CPF, Neighbourhood Watch, Community in Blue, and Victim Support.

The CPF Chair Marietta Hopley said active participation from residents strengthens prevention.

“Reporting suspicious activity early, supporting victims, and promoting road safety all contribute to a safer environment,” she said.

Building a culture of collaboration

The precinct continues to encourage residents to participate in initiatives that improve neighbourhood safety. These include patrols and watches. Residents are also encouraged to volunteer at awareness campaigns.

According to organisers, this collaborative policing brings joint planning and shared accountability. Therefore, it allows faster response, better identification of crime hotspots, and a stronger deterrent effect.
