New wheelchair beach access forms part of Muizenberg upgrade

Major upgrades to the Muizenberg beachfront are progressing well, with several significant milestones recently achieved, says the City of Cape Town.

According to the City’s Deputy Mayor and mayco Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Eddie Andrews, visitors to the beachfront can now clearly see the transformation taking shape.

One of the most visible developments is the stepped revetment along the central promenade.

Large precast concrete units have been installed using a crane, with the structure now extending along a substantial section of the beachfront.

Surfer’s Corner

Good progress has also been made on the in-situ concrete revetment at Surfer’s Corner, where the curved sections are advancing steadily towards completion.

“The precast section of the stepped revetment progressed from the eastern side of the project, while the in-situ casting advanced from the west,” Andrews said.

“The two sections met during the third week of May, marking a major milestone for the construction team.”

To support ongoing marine works, an additional dewatering system has been brought into operation. This allows construction areas to remain dry for longer periods, enabling crews to continue work more efficiently.

Key activities

Several key construction activities are planned in the coming months. Tie-in works at Surfer’s Corner will connect the in-situ and precast concrete sections into a seamless structure.

Civil works for the rebuilding of the pergola and public showers are also expected to begin soon near the Surfer’s Circle Walk of Fame traffic circle.

The new facilities will be positioned approximately two metres inland from their original location to accommodate the expanded promenade and stepped revetment.

New planters will also be installed in the area, while earthworks for parking and paving at the western parking lot, adjacent to the railway line, are set to commence.

Meanwhile, lateral support structures have been installed for the new wheelchair-access beach ramp, allowing for safe excavation near existing buildings along the promenade.

Andrews said the City is satisfied with progress and remains on track to complete the project by December this year.
