The Deputy Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Bernice Swarts, launched the National Biodiversity Assessment (NBA) 2025 on Tuesday 9 December in Cape Town. The report presents South Africa’s most comprehensive and up-to-date review of the country’s natural heritage. Readers can access the full assessment at nba.sanbi.org.za.

“Biodiversity underpins both our economy and society,” said Swarts. “NBA 2025 provides evidence-based insights to guide policy, strengthen governance, and mobilise collective action across all sectors.”

SANBI chief executive Shonisani Munzhedzi highlighted the role of collaboration. He said the assessment demonstrates “the power of collaboration and science to support effective decision-making and biodiversity stewardship.”

The report identifies ongoing threats, including climate change, invasive species, pollution, and unsustainable land use. However, it also shows improvements, where conservation efforts, restoration projects, and community stewardship are producing measurable results.

Deputy Director-General for Biodiversity and Conservation Mohlago Flora Mokgohloa, delivering the vote of thanks, said the NBA “gives us the knowledge we need to act. Now it is up to all of us to turn this knowledge into lasting change.”

The NBA 2025 will guide national planning and support global environmental commitments. It will also help local communities, including those in Newlands and Kirstenbosch, to strengthen sustainability. Healthy ecosystems in these areas support water security, climate resilience, and local biodiversity.
