Three Lentegeur High School learners have been honoured with Mayoral Civic Pride honours for their involvement in uplifting the community.
Lentegeur High School is one of 15 schools that participated in the Mayoral Civic Awards.
Civic awards are conferred by the City of Cape Town and the mayor to acknowledge acts of service, outstanding contributions to the broader city community, personal sacrifice and contributions to building the nation.
Ward 76 councillor Avron Plaatjies says the learners were involved in the Stratus Youth Project on numerous occasions where they assisted with food preparation which was later served within the community.
“They are empowered with skills where they, in turn, would teach their peers valuable life skills and promote freedom of expression through sports and they introduced volleyball to the youth of the Rocklands community,” he says.
“Congratulations to these three learners and a big thank you to the executive mayor (for this honour).”
The learners participated in the upliftment project in June.
School principal Keith Damon says in a letter: “What better way to celebrate our youth than by empowering them with skills where they, in turn, would teach their peers valuable life skills and promote freedom of expression through sports participation. These young men displayed diligence, patience, and great leadership throughout by providing their peers with a basic introduction to the game of volleyball.”
Children in the community are now avid players.
The boys are in Grades 9 and 10.
