Eight young violinists from Masiphumelele are looking forward to pursuing more musical opportunities after attending South Africa’s first Suzuki Children’s Workshops in Paarl, courtesy of full sponsorships from the Suzuki Association of South Africa.

The intensive three-day programme connected them with acclaimed music teachers from South Africa and across the globe.

Specialised lessons

The violinists are all part of Masi Violin Outreach (MVO), a registered non-profit organisation (NPO) and community music project that provides free violin lessons to the youth of Masiphumelele township.

The comprehensive schedule featured specialised individual lessons, interactive group classes and collaborative performance sessions, culminating in a showcase concert that brought all participants together.

The young musicians returned to the Masi Violin project with newfound confidence, inspiration, and a renewed passion for their instruments, according to MVO CEO Nadiah Mony.

She noted the immense growth in the violinists’ technical musical skills and personal development over the three-day period.

Project leaders expressed deep gratitude to the Suzuki Association and the educators for investing significantly in the children’s development.

International musical exchange

The event also marked a significant milestone for local community music education.

Following the children’s workshops, local instructors Aya and Onke remained in Paarl to complete the final phase of their year-long Suzuki Violin Teacher Training Level 1.

The advanced pedagogical skills they acquired will directly benefit the ongoing training syllabus at Masi Violin, Mony added.

The international musical exchange extended beyond the borders of South Africa. A delegation of visiting music teachers from Zimbabwe who had travelled to the Western Cape to finish their Suzuki Teacher Training module, made a special excursion to Masiphumelele.

The Zimbabwean educators observed local classes, integrated into the daily activities, studied specialised African musical arrangements, and engaged in a collaborative jam session with the students.

Simultaneously, the Masi Gig Band continued its Legacy Tour, supported by the City of Cape Town, delivering two high-profile community performances.

The alumni musicians recently brought live music to patients at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital before travelling to Plumstead to perform for the South African Association of Retired Persons, performing for audiences across different generations through the power of live performance.
