Cape Town police are on the hunt for two gunmen who shot and killed a 37-year-old man in Kensington yesterday (17 June).
The deceased, Christopher Carelse, was a key state witness in an alleged multimillion-rand drug case.
He was set to testify in a case allegedly linked to an international drug cartel soon.
Cpt FC van Wyk, provincial police spokesperson, said Carelse was standing outside premises in 1st Street when a gold-coloured vehicle drove past.
He said the same vehicle later returned, and two unidentified males got out of the vehicle armed with firearms.
“The victim ran into the premises and the suspects followed him, shooting at him. He was shot multiple times and later declared dead on the scene by medical personnel.”
According to Van Wyk, the motive for this shooting was under investigation.
Cheslyn Steenberg, Ward 56 councillor, said the incident once again highlighted that the state needed to do more to protect witnesses who testify in high-profile cases.
“The state must do more to protect witnesses. These attacks are planned and then executed. My call is for justice to prevail. My condolences to the family of the deceased.”
Police are calling on anyone with information to contact Crime Stop on 08600 100111.
