CAPE TOWN– A 40-year-old man was arrested in Parkwood recently for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, and appeared in court.
In the early hours of Thursday morning 7 August, at approximately 05:00, Grassy Park police officers conducting routine patrols in Parkers Walk, Parkwood, made a significant arrest involving an unlicensed firearm, confirmed Grassy Park police spokesperson Sgt Alridge Isaacs.
“Officers spotted two unknown males in the area, prompting one of the suspects to flee on foot upon noticing the marked police vehicle. A member of the patrol team immediately gave chase. During the pursuit the fleeing suspect discarded a black-metal Smith & Wesson Taurus revolver, which was later recovered and found to contain two rounds of ammunition.”
On the scene police apprehended a 40-year-old male. He was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
“He is currently in police custody and is expected to appear in the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court once formally charged.
“The arrest forms part of the police’s ongoing efforts to curb illegal firearms and strengthen community safety.”
Grassy Park police are also appealing for volunteers to assist them with victims of various types of crime.
Volunteers should be within the ages of 30 and 60 years old and those who have completed Grade 12 will be considered and screened.
The cut-off date for applications is Sunday 31 August.
