The City of Cape Town has commenced major resurfacing work along Main Road in Claremont and Diep River, aimed at improving road conditions, enhancing safety and easing traffic flow along this busy transport corridor.

The project, undertaken by the City’s Urban Mobility Directorate, forms part of ongoing maintenance efforts to keep key routes in good condition.

Work is expected to be completed by Thursday, 30 April, provided there are no weather-related delays.

To minimise disruption while accelerating progress, construction is taking place in two daily shifts: from 09:00 to 15:30 and again overnight from 20:00 to 05:30.

These shifts run from Monday to Saturday, allowing teams to fast-track the upgrades while avoiding peak traffic periods as far as possible.

Rehabilitation

The scope of the work includes a combination of rehabilitation and maintenance interventions.

This involves removing and replacing sections of the existing road surface to restore driving quality, as well as addressing underlying infrastructure issues that may affect long-term durability.

In certain areas where settlement has occurred, contractors are relaying kerbs and channels to correct uneven surfaces and improve stormwater management.

These targeted repairs are intended to stabilise the roadway and prevent further deterioration.

The Mayco member for Urban Mobility, Rob Quintas, said the upgrades are essential to maintaining a reliable road network.

He thanked residents, businesses and road users for their patience during construction, noting that the work is critical to ensuring safe and efficient movement across the city.

The resurfacing affects specific sections of Main Road in both suburbs. In Claremont, work is being carried out between Old Stanhope Road and Wilderness Road.

Disruptions

In Diep River, the upgrades cover the stretch between Greenfields Road and Hiddingh Road.

Motorists travelling through these areas should anticipate temporary disruptions, including lane closures, reduced speeds and possible delays during active work periods.

The City has urged road users to remain vigilant, adhere to temporary signage and consider alternative routes where possible.

In addition to resurfacing the roadway, the project includes safety and accessibility improvements. New road markings will be applied once construction is complete to enhance visibility for drivers, particularly at night and in adverse weather conditions.

Selected sections of the sidewalks along Main Road will also be resurfaced, improving pedestrian access and the overall condition of the area.

Once completed, the upgrades are expected to provide a smoother, safer travel experience and contribute to the long-term resilience of this important route through the southern suburbs.
