Young artists from Lalela’s Hout Bay programme drew strong interest at the Cape Town Art Fair on Friday 20 February, where their work explored themes of generosity, identity and personal storytelling.
The non-profit organisation (NPO), which provides after-school arts education to young people from under-resourced communities, showcased a curated selection of learner artworks at Booth I3 during the three-day event.
Among those featured were Joyce Nyamana, Nyasha Dzamara, Dealmax Nyatsapfu and Leticia Zidana.
Their pieces attracted steady attention from visitors.
The artworks formed part of Lalela’s “Selfless Stories” curriculum, which encourages learners to reflect on giving and receiving, both towards themselves and others, and how these experiences shape their worldviews.

Lalela content manager Daniels said the theme helps young people process their experiences while building confidence through creative expression.
“Art gives our learners a language to express what they sometimes cannot say in words,” Daniels said. “Through the curriculum, they begin to understand their own stories, their value and how they connect to others.”
A central feature of the stand invited visitors to contribute to an interactive artwork by writing reflections on generosity.
The handwritten notes were added to a collective mosaic that grew throughout the weekend, symbolising community, empathy and shared humanity.
The booth also showcased Lalela scarves featuring original artwork.
Each scarf includes a tag telling the story of the young artist or the curriculum that inspired the design.
According to the organisation, all profits from sales are reinvested into its educational arts programmes.
“When they see their work displayed in spaces like this, it shifts how they see themselves and what they believe is possible,” Daniels said.
Learners also participated in peer-led Kids 4 Kids Tours guided by interns.
Youth from Hout Bay, Masiphumelele, Bertha Retreat and Philippi Village took part, alongside learners from the Zeitz MOCAA youth programme.
