The False Bay Karate Academy hosted a spirited Family Day fundraiser at the Cape Town Cricket Club on Sunday 12 April, bringing together martial artists, performers and families in support of fundraising for an upcoming trip to Namibia.
Although attendance was lower than expected, the event delivered a vibrant programme filled with energy, entertainment and strong community spirit.
Karate club collaboration
Organisers opened participation to karate clubs across the region, highlighting unity and ongoing challenges within the martial arts community.
Support from fellow practitioners added to the sense of collaboration, with instructors from Belhar Kyokushin Dojo and Sensei Herber from another Kyokushin dojo in attendance.
Their involvement underscored the importance of working together to grow the sport and support young athletes.
Skilled performers
Entertainment proved to be a major highlight throughout the day.
Attendees enjoyed live performances from local bands, including the talented youth group RAM and reggae band Sons of Sallassi, whose lively set had the crowd on their feet. Guitarist Desnin engaged the audience early in the programme with sing-along favourites, setting a festive tone for the day.
The programme also featured a performance by the Christian dance group Limitless, along with a live DJ who kept the atmosphere upbeat.
Martial arts demonstrations captivated spectators, with skilled performers from the Praying Mantis Club showcasing their expertise, supported by Shihan Cobe from Kenpo Karate.
Families were well catered for, with a range of activities designed to entertain all ages.
Children enjoyed jumping castles, bumper cars and sumo wrestling, while food stalls created a relaxed, festival-like environment for visitors.
Future goals
Despite the modest turnout, feedback from both vendors and attendees was overwhelmingly positive.
The event not only raised support for its Namibia trip but also reinforced the power of community-driven initiatives.
Organisers say they have taken valuable lessons from the experience and are determined to grow the event in future, with the aim of reaching a wider audience and creating even greater impact.
