Thousands of learners in rural and underserved communities across South Africa will soon have the chance to explore the universe without leaving their schools, thanks to the launch of the Iziko Mobile Planetarium.

The initiative, launched by Iziko Museums of South Africa with support from Amazon, will bring an inflatable planetarium, virtual reality technology and interactive science education directly to schools and libraries, making space science more accessible to young people who have limited access to such resources.

Inside the inflatable dome, learners will enjoy 360-degree digital storytelling, while the 10 high-tech VR headsets will allow them to explore night skies and natural ecosystems interactively, in an engaging manner.

The programme will also emphasise African indigenous astronomy, honouring the continent’s rich cultural heritage, and will be led by Iziko Museums’ dedicated outreach team and science educator.

All shows, films and hands-on activities are aligned with school subjects to enhance science literacy and inspire a lifelong passion for STEM careers.

Dr Bongani Ndhlovu, acting chief executive officer of Iziko Museums, said their mission has always been to make heritage and science accessible to all.

“Partnering with Amazon enables us to overcome physical barriers. We are not just waiting for the public to visit the museum; we are bringing the universe directly to their doorsteps.”

Starting with initial pilot testing, this programme is poised to launch an inspiring community-outreach tour, expanding each year to connect with thousands of eager young learners across the country.

Ndhlovu encouraged schools, libraries and community organisations to stay engaged with their upcoming schedule.
