The driver of a car discovered in Kenilworth on 17 December last year with a number plate found to have been cloned reacted to last week’s coverage (“Dude, that’s my car!”, People’s Post, 16 January) on social media, saying he was the one who discovered the red Chevrolet identical to his with the controversial number plate.
The complainant, a 30-year-old Uber driver from Lotus River, told People’s Post he was picking a client up in Kenilworth on that Sunday when he discovered his number plate had been cloned.
“I discovered the cloned plates when I was picking someone up to take to Langa from Kenilworth. The car was standing in a parking area opposite where I was picking my passenger up.”
When the Uber driver told his client his suspicions about vehicle across the street she told him the car had been parked there for at least two months.
Claremont police officers responded to the scene to investigate.
“The police told me to go home because they were waiting for a tow truck,” he said. “They then gave me a case number and advised that if any crime was committed with my car reg I must refer to the case number.”
Lt Col Marnus Fourie of Claremont police confirmed the case number. “It seems as if the same cloned 2013 Chevrolet Spark with the false plates was hijacked in a Kleinvlei case,” he said. “The vehicle is still not recovered according to the [docket] system and is still listed as wanted.”
The original number plate of the hijacked vehicle was known to police, Fourie pointed out. Asked about due process in such a case, he replied that if someone was arrested they were likely to appear in court for the case to continue.
Fourie said if the original owners of the hijacked Chevrolet sporting the false plates could verify or prove ownership they were welcome to reclaim their Chevrolet Spark reported hijacked in the Kleinvlei area.
People’s Post additionally reached out to Eerste River police to confirm investigation from their end. No feedback had been received at time of publication.
