Groote Schuur Primary marks 90 years with Shakespeare celebration
Groote Schuur Primary School in Rondebosch celebrated its 90th anniversary with a Shakespeare-themed event on Thursday 23 April. The celebration combined literature, creativity, and school pride.
The milestone saw learners dress as book characters and form a human “90” to symbolise unity and the school’s history.
Shakespeare theme drives literacy focus
School librarian Kaylin Haywood said the idea to link William Shakespeare’s birthday with the anniversary reflected the school’s focus on literacy and heritage.
“The idea to combine William Shakespeare’s birthday with our school’s 90th anniversary stemmed from our commitment to celebrating both literary excellence and our rich school heritage.
“Shakespeare represents timeless storytelling and language, which aligns closely with our focus on literacy. The 90th milestone gave us a meaningful opportunity to reflect on our journey and achievements.”
Learners embrace dress-up and activities
Haywood said learners responded with enthusiasm to the dress-up element and activities throughout the day.
“Many embraced the opportunity to come dressed as their favourite book characters or in Shakespearean-inspired attire. Their excitement was evident throughout the day.”
She said the school used the event to encourage participation and creativity around reading.
Human ‘90’ highlights school unity
One of the main highlights was the human “90” formation.
Haywood said it symbolised unity and pride across the school community.
“It visually represented our collective journey over the years.”
A balloon display also formed part of the visual celebration on the day.
Literacy remains central focus
Haywood said literacy and reading remain a core focus at the school.
“We continuously encourage a love for reading through various programmes and activities.”
She said the celebration supported these goals by making literature interactive and visible.
“It reinforced the importance of books and storytelling in learners’ daily lives.”
Looking ahead after milestone
Haywood said the school plans to build on the milestone through future literacy-driven activities.
“We hope to expand our literacy initiatives and further involve the school community in future events.”
