CAPE TOWN–A school teacher from Ocean View is looking forward to taking over the reins as principal at St James RC Primary School in Kalk Bay.

Desiree Williams was appointed as principal on Wednesday 6 August and will officially take over on Wednesday 1 October.

She embarked on her journey in the teaching profession in 2005 as a teaching assistant.

During this time, she mentored learners with reading, assisted teachers in the classroom, and supervised the learners on the school buses.

She says it was during those formative years that she discovered her deep love for working with children — a passion that has guided her ever since.

Most of her teaching journey has unfolded at St James RC, she adds.

At the school she taught Grade 4, Grade 3 and Grade 1, and also spent time as a pre-school teacher in Ocean View, which aided her commitment to early childhood education.

Williams says her career has been marked by dedication, growth, and an unwavering belief in the potential of every learner.

“The school is uniquely situated in the Fisherman’s Flats with no boundary fence. What might seem like a challenge has become a symbol of trust and unity. The surrounding community protects us daily. It’s one of the reasons St James is among the safest schools in the area. It’s a beautiful example of how a community can rally around its children,” she explains.

Williams credits the mentorship of Greg Gordon for opening the door to teaching for her, she also credits Lynette Saunders, former principal, for shaping her leadership. For the past few years, she has served as Acting Principal.

Williams says it is both humbling and an honour to serve as principal. She says she is focused on building upon the strong foundation of the school.

Her goals include strengthening academic excellence, nurturing holistic growth, and continuing to foster the safe, caring culture that defines the school.

“It is both humbling and an honour to serve as principal,” she says. “I am committed to leading with compassion, integrity, and dedication. I want every learner to leave St James knowing they are valued, capable, and ready for the future.”

Williams says that despite the socio-economic challenges that many schools face, she remains inspired by the resilience and achievements of her learners.

“Watching them overcome, achieve, and grow in confidence — those are the moments that reaffirm why I chose teaching as my calling.”

People’s Post reached out to the school for comment but they could not respond before the time of going to print.
