Fish Hoek Library will host a free Digital Literacy Workshop on Tuesday 27 October to help community members bridge the digital divide and build technology skills.

The event starts at 10:00 and aims to transform tech-anxious residents into independent, confident internet users. The workshop addressed a vital community need by showing that anyone can master modern technology, regardless of their current skill level.

Foundation pillars

Organisers have structured the event into four clear, foundation-building pillars to help those attending it navigate online library systems and digital resources without relying constantly on facility staff.

First, participants will learn the basics of browsing online library catalogues by searching for materials using titles, authors or keywords.

The session will then move into practical training on making digital book reservations and requesting inter-library loans from other branches, effectively expanding local readers’ access to the city’s wider book network.

Workshop

Finally, participants will discover how to unlock digital collections, including a massive library of e-books and electronic resources.

The workshop is tailored specifically for complete tech beginners, older adults who need patient, step-by-step instruction, and lifelong learners trying to develop better online research habits.

Organisers stress that the environment is fully supportive, where questions are highly encouraged and mistakes are simply treated as part of the learning journey.

In a world where vital services increasingly move online, these basic skills foster digital inclusion, improve daily problem solving, and offer participants a stepping stone to other online platforms.

The practical one-hour schedule concludes at 11:00 am after dedicated hands-on practice and a review session. Residents, students and seniors are encouraged to arrive early at the library to secure their spots.
