CAPE TOWN – Eskom has intensified its smart meter rollout program across the Western Cape, with contractors set to begin installations in parts of Philippi on Saturday, 27 December, the utility announced on Friday.

The move marks an expansion of the modernization initiative, which launched in October 2025 in the Tableview area and continues to progress. The smart meter program is part of Eskom’s broader effort to upgrade South Africa’s national electricity grid infrastructure.

According to the utility, Western Cape customers will receive new smart meters at no charge, with advance notification provided before installation teams arrive in specific areas. The company has assured customers that both new installations and replacements of old or faulty meters will be completed without cost to consumers.

The ambitious nationwide program aims to replace conventional meters for all 7.2 million Eskom customers by 31 March 2029. The new technology will enable customers to monitor their electricity consumption in real time and manage usage more effectively through enhanced self-service options powered by accurate, up-to-date consumption data.

Eskom has called on customers in priority rollout areas to ensure their meter boxes remain easily and safely accessible to installation teams and authorized contractors to facilitate smooth operations.

The smart meter initiative forms part of Eskom’s strategic objectives to achieve universal electricity access, eliminate load reduction, and build a more sustainable energy infrastructure for South Africa.

The utility expressed gratitude to customers for their continued support as the modernization program advances across the province.
