The 32nd Cape Town International Kite Festival will return to Cape Town on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 October, bringing thousands of people together at Youngsfield Military Base in Ottery to raise awareness for mental health.

Hosted by Cape Mental Health, the annual event will once again feature giant kites from local and international kite flyers, family entertainment, interactive activities, food vendors and opportunities for visitors to fly their own kites.

This year’s theme, #ColourTheSky, highlights the importance of connection, kindness and supporting people living with mental health conditions.

Cape Mental Health chief executive officer, Prof Ingrid Daniels, said the festival remains an important platform for raising awareness while generating much-needed funds for the organisation.

“We are excited to host the 32nd Cape Town International Kite Festival this spring – a time of growth, renewal and colour. The kite festival provides us with an awesome opportunity to brighten the sky with messages of hope, stories of resilience and to celebrate the courage and bravery of those who live with a mental health condition,” she said.

Daniels added that the event supports Cape Mental Health’s work in communities across the Western Cape.

Daniels said this year’s theme reflects both the festival’s visual spectacle and its message of hope.

“Bright colours naturally trigger feelings of joy, optimism, hope, positivity and happiness despite difficult and challenging times. Colour overrides darkness and gives hope in the face of adversity. Kites soar against gusty winds and colour the sky in adverse conditions,” she said.

Organisers say every ticket sold and donation made helps Cape Mental Health continue providing free mental health services to vulnerable communities throughout the Western Cape.
