Entries for the Blisters for Bread Charity Family Fun Walk close at midnight on Sunday 2 August, giving supporters a chance to make a difference for children like those at St Agnes Primary School in Woodstock, where many learners rely on school meals each day.
The annual fundraiser, organised by the Peninsula School Feeding Association (PSFA) in association with Lucky Star, will take place on Sunday 16 August at the Green Point Common Sports Grounds.
One of the people ensuring those meals reach learners is Heather Kannemeyer. She prepares food for about 85 children at the school every weekday.
Kannemeyer arrives at the school at around 06:30 daily to begin preparing breakfast before serving porridge between 07:30 and 08:00. Lunch is served at 10:30.
She says watching children enjoy a warm meal each day is what keeps her motivated.
“It feels great cooking for the children because you can see some children don’t have anything and are hungry. It gives me a sense of satisfaction knowing that there’s something for them to eat.”
Principal Elesia Kolbe said the school has been a beneficiary since 2003.
“Through this valued partnership, our learners receive nutritious meals that help ensure they are better equipped to focus, learn and succeed in the classroom.”
Kolbe adds that the impact of the PSFA extends far beyond providing food.
“It has contributed to improved concentration, better academic performance, increased school attendance, and happier, healthier learners. For many children, the meal they receive at school is the only nutritious meal they will have that day.”
She encourages Capetonians to support the initiative and help raise vital funds.
“By participating in the Blisters for Bread Fun Walk, you are helping to make a meaningful difference in the lives of thousands of learners. Every step taken helps to ensure that children can come to school with hope, ready to learn and build a brighter future.”
Participants can choose between a 10km walk starting at 07:30 and a 5km walk starting at 08:00.
An entry fee of R125 can provide 23 children with a nutritious breakfast and lunch for one day.
Entries are limited to 10 000 participants and will only be accepted online.
