Sun Valley Eco Watch is appealing to residents and other sponsors to donate mortar mix to plaster the ecobrick bench in Sun Valley.
Although ecobricks are free, the other materials required to build with them are not.
Three ecobrick benches are in Noordhoek and one in Fish Hoek.
According to Karen Gray-Kilfoil, secretary of Sun Valley Eco Watch, they have built four ecobenches in Sun Valley, but the benches are not complete yet.
“We’ve decided to build ecobricks as they are free and are made mostly of plastic litter. Ecobricks are a temporary way to store and use our waste. Our community has been making ecobricks for years and now we want to use them for some projects. There are schools making ecobricks but we didn’t really use theirs. Most of our ecobricks come from homes in Sun Valley. This project is promoted by Sun Valley Eco Watch and Waste Reduction Far South, among others,” says Gray-Kilfoil.
Each ecobric takes quite a while to fill with compressed litter, depending on how much packaging you buy. Each ecobrick can hold about two big black bags of litter.
“The ecobrick bench in Sun Valley has taken a few weeks as the community is doing it in two hour-sessions over weekends. We have decided to complete the plastering in January, as everyone is so busy at this time. The ecobrick bench is in the public playpark called Boeier-Barque Park in Sun Valley. Over the festive season I may do some plastering in my spare time,” she says.
“We were lucky enough to get donations of metal rods, wire mesh and some concrete and mortar mix. We will need more mortar mix to complete the plastering and if anyone can assist they are welcome to contact me on 084 818 5273 or email SVEcoWatch@gmail.com,” Gray-Kilfoil says.
