The Animal Rescue Organisation (ARO) is celebrating four decades of enriching the lives of the animals and communities they serve by launching an ambitious birthday fundraiser to mark ARO’s 40th anniversary and also the 39th birthday of Lindsey Concer, head of fundraising.
The fundraising drive, timed to coincide with Spay Day on Tuesday 24 February, aims to raise R21 450 to fund 39 animal sterilisation procedures โ one for each year of the organiser’s life.
Milestone celebrations with purpose
“This year, ARO turns 40 โ a milestone that fills me with pride,” said Concer.
“On Tuesday 24 February, not only will I be celebrating my 39th birthday, but I also want to make it truly meaningful.”
The campaign combines personal celebration with ARO’s core mission of preventing animal cruelty and overpopulation through sterilisation programmes.

Addressing critical need
Sterilisation represents the cornerstone of ARO’s animal welfare strategy, addressing root causes of animal suffering in local communities.
“It is the most effective way to prevent cruelty, neglect, and overpopulation,” she explained.
“Every sterilisation saves countless lives and reduces suffering for animals who might otherwise face hunger, disease, or abandonment.”
The procedure provides long-term benefits beyond immediate animal welfare, helping control stray populations and reducing pressure on animal shelters and rescue organisations.
Community impact
ARO’s four-decade presence in animal rescue has established the organisation as a vital community resource. The sterilisation programme directly impacts local animal populations while educating communities about responsible pet ownership.
“Your donation, no matter the size, will directly fund sterilisation procedures that give animals a healthier, safer future,” she said.
Call for support
The campaign invites community members to contribute toward the R21 450 target, emphasising that donations of any amount make a meaningful difference. “Let’s make this birthday about more than candles and cake โ let’s make it about life, compassion, and hope,” she concluded.
