CAPE TOWN-The Animal Rescue Organisation’s (ARO) ambitious birthday fundraiser has achieved remarkable success, raising R20 750 this week toward its R21 450 target to fund 39 animal sterilisation procedures.

The campaign, celebrating ARO’s 40th anniversary alongside head of fundraising Lindsey Concer’s 39th birthday, has reached 96% of its goal with community support exceeding expectations.

Milestone achievement within reach

Timed to coincide with Spay Day on Tuesday 24 February, the fundraiser aims to fund one sterilisation for each year of Concer’s life, combining personal celebration with ARO’s core mission of preventing animal cruelty and overpopulation.”This year, ARO turns 40 – a milestone that fills me with pride,” said Concer.

The organisation encourages continued donations despite nearing its target.

“Since we’re so close, why stop here? Every additional contribution means even more animals can be sterilised, preventing future suffering and creating lasting change,” Concer stated.

Critical community need

Sterilisation represents the cornerstone of ARO’s animal welfare strategy, addressing root causes of suffering in local communities.

“It is the most effective way to prevent cruelty, neglect, and overpopulation,” Concer explained.

“Every sterilisation saves countless lives and reduces suffering for animals who might otherwise face hunger, disease, or abandonment. The procedure provides long-term benefits beyond immediate animal welfare, helping control stray populations while reducing pressure on shelters and rescue organisations,” she said.

Four decades of impact

The sterilisation programme directly impacts local animal populations while educating communities about responsible pet ownership.

“Your donation, no matter the size, will directly fund sterilisation procedures that give animals a healthier, safer future,” Concer said.

The campaign emphasises that donations of any amount create meaningful difference in animal welfare.
