The section where a trench collapsed at an infrastructure repair project at the V&A Waterfront has been cordoned off whilst an incident report is being compiled.

The collapse, which took place at the East Pier at the V&A Waterfront on Friday 23 January, left two construction workers trapped before they were extricated and taken to hospital.

No serious injuries sustained

Donald Kau, V&A Waterfront spokesperson, said the workers were trapped but were saved by protective shoring that forms part of the trench in which they were working.

According to Kau, the workers did not sustain serious injuries and have since been discharged from hospital.

He added that construction projects in the surrounding areas are continuing as normal, as they were not affected.

Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness Emergency Medical Services (EMS) spokesperson Shimoney Regter said emergency crews responded to the scene and were assisted by specialised rescue partners, including the police, during the operation.
