CAPE TOWN – A swift response by a City of Cape Town law enforcement officer prevented a potential container theft at Muizenberg Main Beach parking area on Thursday morning 15 January, leading to the arrest of a suspect wanted in connection with another case.
The incident unfolded at approximately 09:28 when the alert officer noticed suspicious activity involving a rigging truck positioned near one of the hired containers used as mobile offices during the peak summer season.
Suspicious circumstances
The officer became immediately curious as the container was still actively in use, prompting him to investigate and call for backup assistance.
Upon approaching the scene, officers observed four individuals – two positioned on the truck while the other two walked away from the area.
Driver’s explanation raises questions
The truck driver approached the officers claiming that one of the individuals who had departed was the legitimate client who had hired the rigging truck to transport the container to Delft.
Both the driver and another individual identified themselves as legitimate employees of the truck hire company and agreed to assist officers in tracking down the suspects.
Chase and arrest
The group located the suspects at the corner of Axminster and Royal roads. One individual, who had changed his clothing by this time, was subsequently arrested and transported to Muizenberg Police Station for processing.
The second suspect managed to escape after getting into a waiting vehicle.
Additional charges likely
Further investigation by the police revealed that the arrested suspect was wanted in connection with another unrelated case, potentially leading to additional charges.
The investigation continues as police work to identify the escaped suspect and determine whether this was part of a larger theft operation targeting municipal containers.
