The Lions Club of Mitchell’s Plain has revived a project that aims to relieve hunger.

Club president Rashmiyah Lucas said the Jars of Hope project was first run a few years ago.

“We haven’t done Jars of Hope in a while, but we need to do a Hunger Project as planned,” she said.

With the help of her husband, she traditionally would cook food to be distributed, but with a limit on time and with other commitments, it was decided to revive the jar project, which does not involve cooking.

“The beneficiaries are 7de Laan informal settlement in Strandfontein,” Lucas said. “Friends and family generously donated the empty jars, and this week we focused only on ingredients.

“Once again we received assistance from friends and family by donating ingredients as well as cash.”

On Saturday 18 November the Lions Club members filled the empty jars with rice, soup or beef stock blocks, lentils, soup mix and split peas.

“We are very grateful for the donations received in cash and kind,” said Lucas.

The jar creates a meal when all contents are cooked together. The 70 jars will be delivered on Saturday 25 November.
