A group of 50 locals attended a consumer- and financial-education conference on Tuesday 13 February.
Hosted by a leading bank at the Portland Indoor Centre, the programme included a financial lecture and motivation as well as a panel discussion involving community leaders, businesswomen in various sectors and bank management. This was also an opportunity for those attending to engage with various financial products offered by the bank.
As part of the session, those who attended were encouraged to make and record goals both big and small as something to work towards.
Planning is key to financial freedom, regardless of how much money one has, speakers reiterated.
The group was a mix of employed and unemployed residents, business people, community leaders and representatives of the NGO sector.
The event was funded by the bank to foster financial literacy. The area forms part of the bank’s target audience.
In planning the event, the bank identified a previously disadvantaged community in need of assistance to make smarter financial decisions and linking them to products to achieve this.
