The University of the Western Cape (UWC) made sure Van der Stel-Evergreens (VDE) does not finish as one of the two top teams in Super League B to automatically qualify for the semi-finals with a 31-21 victory in Stellenbosch.
The students were back in action after a break of five weeks, while VDE was one of the many club teams in WP whose games were affected by the inclement weather and the closing of municipal facilities by the City of Cape Town.
The students played nine games and will have to complete their fixtures by playing on a Wednesday and a Saturday to fulfill their 2024 commitments. UWC plays All Saints tomorrow (8 August).
The two teams who finish in positions one and two on the log after 14 games in Super League B qualify for the semi-finals. Teams three to six compete in quarter-finals to determine who will play in the semi-final against the two top teams.
Before Saturday’s encounter, VDE was lying second after 11 matches behind Hands and Heart from Kraaifontein, who lost against Hamediehs (28-27) in the dying moments of the game.
Hamediehs is one of three Super League C teams from 2023 who are rattling the experienced teams in Super League B with their performances on the pitch.
Besides VDE, Kraaifontein is the other team and is also making in-roads in the league. Kraaifontein stumped Hamediehs in their encounter and is now waiting for VDE on Wednesday 14 August, in Kraaifontein. Hamediehs is in action tomorrow (Wednesday) evening against All Saints
- In Super League A, Hamiltons were too strong for St Georges and beat the visitors 20-11. Uni-Mil beat False Bay 21-13, Villagers beat Tygerberg 30-21, UCT played against Helderberg from the Strand and UCT won 43-34, while the result between SK-Walmers and Brackenfell was 30-25 in Brackenfell’s favour.
- In Super League C, Primrose was victorious against Gardens by 49-30, Rangers beat Young Peoples 22-20 and Busy Bee was too good for Pniel-Villagers by beating them 39-32 at home.
