In a bid to bring together members of all skill levels who share a passion for capturing the world through a lens, the Fish Hoek Photo Club (FHPC) encourages aspiring photographers and hobbyists from across the Far South peninsula to join the club.
While the club officially meets only once a month, members regularly take part in outings, workshops and practical sessions designed to encourage growth across a variety of photographic disciplines, said spokesperson Margaret Silk.
The club meets at the Yacht Club in Simon’s Town, on the fourth Monday of each month, from 7:30 PM for approximately two hours.
A typical meeting begins with a brief update from the chairperson, covering club news, upcoming events, and outings.
Occasionally, we host guest speakers who give short presentations. The majority of the evening is dedicated to reviewing and scoring members’ monthly image submissions.
“Some people prefer formal portraits, others prefer action and sport. This month we delved into Macro photography – extreme close-up images of small objects like bugs, flowers, even skin, which once magnified, reveal interesting detail and intriguing textures,” she said.
During the workshop, members learned about the specialised techniques and equipment needed to achieve successful high-magnification images.
Topics included the use of macro lenses, lighting tools such as flash units and diffusers, and stabilisation methods to reduce blur.
Participants also explored the importance of balancing technical precision with creativity through careful composition, depth-of-field management and manual focusing techniques.
“After a presentation and discussion on the theory, it was down to the practical session where everyone tried to put into practice what we’d learned, ably guided and assisted by the senior and more experienced members of the club,” Silk said.
FHPC are eager to welcome new and experienced photographers to join their club.
“If you’d like to get a feel for our photography and how the club works, you can go to our website www.fishhoekphotoclub.co.za where you’ll find examples of our images and all the relevant information, plus an open invitation to come along to a meeting,” she said.
