The Lions Club of Cape Town supported women at Sisters Incorporated, a Kenilworth based shelter for abused women and children, with a Mother’s Day donation. The club delivered 20 gift bags on Thursday 7 May, ahead of Mother’s Day on Sunday 10 May.

The initiative aimed to comfort women staying at the Kenilworth shelter. The facility supports women and children affected by gender-based violence (GBV). Club members prepared the gift bags during the week. Each bag included pampering items with the intent of making recipients feel appreciated and remembered during a difficult time.

Gail Darling, a club member, explained the purpose of the initiative.

“Mother’s Day can be an emotional time for women who are separated from loved ones or facing difficult circumstances,” Darling said. She added that the club wanted to show care and support. The group aimed to remind women that the community sees and values them.

Darling said small gestures can make a real difference. She explained that the club hoped the gifts brought comfort and joy.

Club president Paula Lang said the donation reflects the organisation’s broader mission of providing practical support for vulnerable communities across Cape Town.

Beyond this project, the Lions Club runs several outreach programmes. These include donations of food to six shelters, collecting spectacles for people who cannot afford eyewear and donating warm clothing to Mowbray Maternity Hospital. The club also hosts bingo sessions for senior citizens in Thornton and runs sandwich drives for an educare centre in Brooklyn. Club members create handmade cloth dolls for children in need. The club also hosts a bi-monthly book sale in Gardens and delivers fresh fruit and vegetables to shelters every month.

According to the club, its outreach expansion follows a merger between two branches. The Pinelands branch, established in 1961, merged with the original Cape Town club, founded in 1957.
