Kensington police are monitoring Windermere High School today following a stabbing incident that broke out between a group of learners yesterday (Wednesday).

One learner sustained moderate injuries, while two others were mildly injured.

Several videos circulating on social media show a group of learners involved in a squabble.

Medical personnel were on the scene and attended to the learners, but no-one required further medical attention.

Millicent Merton, a spokesperson for the Western Cape Education Department, said three learners sustained injuries in a fight between two groups on the school premises.

“The incident was reported to Safe Schools, and the school received support from law enforcement,” she explained. “The school will now follow its Code of Conduct to address the matter.”

Lt Col Nkosinathi Losini, station commander, said: “Things are quiet today, but police officers were deployed there to monitor, and they were assisted by Metro police and Law Enforcement.”

He said no case had been registered yet.

Some parents had taken to social media suggesting the incident was racially motivated.

Ward 56 councillor Cheslyn Steenberg said this was not the first time a fight had broken out at the school and that it was important that the education department, the school and all stakeholders “champion the implementation” of cultural-diversity programmes.

“We live in a diverse country and community. We need to talk about cultural diversity and tolerance… We are human beings.”

Steenberg said he would work with the community to activate support systems and help ensure everyone’s safety.

“I have already started the engagement process with stakeholders in the community to request a sit-down to see how we can address the issue,” he concluded.
