CAPE TOWN-Eleven-year-old Lotus River bookworm Cassidy Hendricks continues to be a beacon of light for the youth in her community after sponsoring sports gear for young cyclists tackling this year’s Cape Town Cycle Tour.

Hendricks spearheaded a donation drive for 20 young riders from Fairmount Secondary School taking part in the cycle tour and needed R11 600 to secure their fundraising goal for their entry.

These donations included bike-servicing funding, equipment and race-day essentials.

Hendricks is a Grade 5 learner at Ferndale Primary School in Ottery.

She recently held a reading workshop at Fairmount Secondary School, Grassy Park on Wednesday 4 February for World Read Aloud Day (WRAD) (“Ward 65 Hero reads to matrics”, People’s Post, Tuesday 17 February).

Hendricks said she was inspired to assist the riders after the school’s cycling team requested assistance with their fundraising goal last year.

“I read about it and felt that their cause was a worthy one with collecting cycling apparel such as shorts, socks as well as nutritional products and supplements. Our goal is to provide the team with practice gear and a breakfast prior to the race as well as sustenance for race day.”

Recently Hendricks received racing helmets, gloves, vests and goggles from Infinity Cycling Club.

The FALKE SA shop sponsored boxes of cycling socks towards Hendricks for the young riders as well.

Her proud grandmother Brenda Tommy also thanked Nutriseed with supplying the riders with a nutritious breakfast on the day.

“A healthy nutritional breakfast will be served with fresh fruit and Nutriseed packs will be enjoyed during the ride.”

On Friday 6 March each rider received their goodie bag with all the equipment, gear and snacks for the cycle tour.

“To everyone who reached out to assist with this goal, I send a huge thank you from the bottom of my heart. The cyclists are going to be blown away! We still need 20 pairs of short cycling gloves and nine pairs of sunglasses.”

Cassidy Hendricks received heaps of sponsored sports equipment and cycling gear for the cyclists.
