Sixteen international postgraduate students visited the Provincial Disaster Management Centre on Tuesday 20 January to learn how the Western Cape coordinates disaster response and government communication. This Provincial disaster management centre visit provided a valuable opportunity for the students to understand local strategies and practices.
Western Cape Minister of local government, environmental affairs and development planning Anton Bredell hosted the delegation at the Provincial Disaster Management Centre (PDMC).
The visit coincided with a media briefing earlier in the day by Premier Alan Winde, offering students insight into how the provincial government coordinates and communicates across spheres of government.
The students, from Senegal, Ethiopia, The Gambia, Namibia and Germany, are in South Africa as part of the Public Management in International Cooperation (PMIC) Master’s programme.

During the engagement, Bredell outlined the province’s approach to intergovernmental relations, disaster management coordination and collaborative governance.
He highlighted the importance of clear communication, cooperation between institutions and shared responsibility in ensuring effective service delivery.
The session was interactive, with students engaging officials in discussions on public administration, coordination during crises and transparency in governance.
The visit formed part of the programme’s practical exposure component, aimed at strengthening international understanding of public sector management in different governance contexts.
