CAPE TOWN – Two suspects appeared in the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court on Monday 5 January facing multiple serious charges, including attempted murder, following a dramatic high-speed chase and shootout with police on New Year’s Day.

The men, aged 34 and 43, were arrested after a dangerous pursuit through Steenberg that ended when their vehicle crashed and police recovered an illegal firearm with ammunition.

Members of the Steenberg Crime Prevention Unit followed up information about a suspicious looking Toyota Etios in Tango Crescent, Steenberg, and pursued it.

The vehicle was spotted but the driver sped off, said police spokesperson Sgt Wesley Twigg.

“A high-speed chase ensued and one of the occupants of the vehicle fired shots at the police who were in pursuit. The Toyota Etios came to a standstill in Joe Marks Boulevard after the driver lost control over the vehicle,” he said.

The suspects were apprehended after a 9mm pistol with 13 rounds of ammunition was found in the vehicle.

The suspects were charged with attempted murder, illegal possession of a firearm and illegal possession of ammunition.
