CAPE TOWN – The Masque Theatre is spreading festive cheer with its annual year-end production, The Princess and The Pea, running from Friday 12 December to Sunday 11 January with a distinctly South African flavour.

This much-vaunted facility, a registered non-profit organisation established in 1959 by local attorney Bertie Stern, continues its tradition of providing world-class theatre, whether staged by amateur enthusiasts or professionals, as well as quality rehearsal space.
Local musical identity
This year’s production features a fresh South African twist on the classic fairytale, incorporating music from local artists alongside international favourites. “For this year’s fairytale we’re adding plenty of local flavour, with music from Freshlyground, Jesse and Johnny Clegg, and Shekhinah,” the show’s producer and Programme Manager Faeron Wheeler said.
Recipe for heroes
The production aims to teach audiences that the recipe for a true hero includes “a pinch of bravery, a dash of honour, a swig of dry humor and a teaspoon of something special.”
The story follows Princess Anika as she learns the true meaning of just leadership, while young Eli discovers how to stand up for himself and Stefan realizes he’s more than just his appearance.
All-ages entertainment
Wheeler emphasised that despite being part of their fairytale tradition, the show appeals to audiences of all ages. “It really is a show for all ages, not just for kids,” she said. “I have been giggling away at the jokes and love watching the rehearsals.”
Looking ahead to 2026
The theatre has an exciting year planned ahead, with most of 2026 already mapped out. The big mid-year production will be the Broadway musical A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, produced in partnership with Milnerton Players. The show will be performed at both The Masque and the Milnerton Playhouse, with auditions already completed under director Kyla Thorburn and musical director Barend van der Westhuizen.
Year-round programming
Other 2026 highlights include the regular Valentine Soirée in February, monthly play readings, the One-Act Play Festival moved to August, and continued Youth Theatre Club activities with productions during school holidays.
Ticket information
Tickets are priced at R160 for adults, R130 for pensioners and u-18s, with a family discount of four tickets for R500 (R125 each). Bookings can be made through Quicket.
The production represents the fifth instalment of The Masque’s cherished fairytale tradition, continuing the theatre’s mission to provide quality community entertainment while nurturing local theatrical talent.
