Cape Town police are on the hunt for three armed robbers involved in a house break-in in Camps Bay in the early hours of this morning (12 December). A 85-year-old man was assaulted when intruders gained access to his home in Petrel Close.

Capt Liaan Janse van Rensburg, Camps Bay police station commander, said: “The owner woke up at 03:00 when he heard sounds coming from his lounge. He saw three suspects in his house. They forced a wooden sliding door open. They ran when they saw him. He went to his bedroom to get his firearm and his cellphone to call for help.”

He said the brazen suspects returned.

“The suspects returned and assaulted the homeowner. He sustained injuries to his face, body and legs. They took his firearm and cellphone and fled the scene.”

The officer said the man was treated on the scene by emergency services.

“He is doing okay, albeit traumatised and receiving trauma counselling.”

The officer confirmed an extensive search is currently underway and said a case of house robbery is being investigated.

“The search for the suspects is ongoing. We have teams from our security partners, law-enforcement searching for the three unknown male suspects.”

JP Louw, South African National Parks spokesperson, urged hikers and residents to stay clear of Camps Bay hiking trails as the search are underway.

“Rangers and security forces are searching the area with the help of drones. For your safety, all hikers are strongly advised to avoid the Camps Bay hiking trails until further notice. Stay alert and prioritise your safety.”

Louw said updates will be provided as soon as authorities declare the area safe.
