CAPE TOWN โ Muizenberg’s iconic beach huts will welcome the launch of the area’s first Beach Hut Sauna on Monday 1 December.
The beach huts are among 76 huts that fall under the care of the Beach Hut Trust (BHT).
They are managed by the BHT, which was founded by Angela Gorman in 2020 to restore and protect these City assets.

BHT is a partnership between local residents, private companies and City representatives.
The huts are more than a century old, from the early 1900s.
Gorman says the aim of the sauna launch is to intertwine “history, heritage and community in a way never seen before.
Sauna goals
“For more than a century, the Muizenberg beach huts have been woven into the social and cultural fabric of the False Bay coastline. Families have changed in them, surfers have sheltered beside them, and generations of Capetonians have used them as the backdrop to their memories,” Gorman said.
“This pilot project forms part of the Beach Hut Trust’s ongoing commitment to restoring these structures, keeping them relevant, and ensuring they remain a source of pride for the entire Muizenberg community,” she added.
BHT collaborated with the City and Hot Huts to bring the vision of the sauna to life.

“Traditional saunas, often found in gyms or exclusive hotels, have typically been out of reach for many. This community sauna changes that by offering everyone the chance to enjoy the restorative benefits of heat therapy, sea air, and cold-water swimming,” she says.
Community connection
Hot Huts is a company that provides mobile saunas. Gorman says saunas will provide a healthy way of creating real connection with visitors using the facility.
“The conversations that unfold inside are often deep and meaningful, centred on health, balance and well-being. People from all walks of life meet, relax and engage, reminding us of what community means,” she adds.
Preservation
The Beach Hut Sauna will also contribute directly to the preservation of the huts.
“As a community-driven initiative, a portion of proceeds from the sauna will support the Trust’s restoration fund, helping to paint, repair and protect the huts through the summer and beyond,” Gorman said
“For Muizenberg, this isn’t just a wellness experience; it’s a way for beachgoers to play an active role in safeguarding the future of a heritage site they love,” she explained.
