A group of swimmers are looking forward to being appointed this year’s lifeguards stationed at Cape Town’s beaches after they competed in the final lifesavers assessment on Friday 8 August.
The City of Cape Town’s recreation and parks department held their last lifesavers assessment for the year at Muizenberg beach on Friday 8 August.

This year almost 600 potential lifesavers braved Muizenberg beach’s freezing water and participated in various exercise drills that had to be completed in ten minutes to secure their qualification.
On the day the swimmers also went for interviews at the Muizenberg Civic Centre.
The annual assessments are an important step in preparing for the summer season.
Mayco member for community service and health Francine Higham said she was thrilled to witness the next batch of lifesavers complete their assessments.

“We’ve got almost 600 lifeguards that we’re recruiting for all our pools and beaches across the City of Cape Town and this is incredibly important because we want our residents and visitors to the City to be able to enjoy our pools and our beaches safely.
“We’ve had six weeks of assessments and opened the applications earlier this year as we need to make sure the lifeguards are fit and that they know their signals and how the swirl works come the summer.
“We’re planning another announcement regarding the lifesavers back at Muizenberg beach around November which will also be when we announce our summer readiness plans and start opening up some of the beaches and a staged opening of some of our pools,” she said.
