THE Democratic Alliance (DA) recently proposed a plan to the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, on tackling the escalating crime crisis at the Arlington Waste Disposal Site in Gqeberha, following the tragic murder of a father and son. According to the DA, the site, which has a history of armed robberies, has become increasingly dangerous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On March 3, DA representatives, including DA NMB Caucus Leader, Councillor Rano Kayser, conducted an oversight inspection at the site. They discovered serious security deficiencies, such as broken perimeter fencing and a lack of proper access control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a statement, Councillor Kayser declared, \u201cThe current security measures at the waste disposal site are grossly inadequate, exposing residents to unacceptable risks of attacks, accidents, and, most tragically, loss of life. It is the municipality\u2019s fundamental responsibility to ensure residents can access the site safely, without fearing for their lives.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a result, Kayser shared that the DA has submitted a comprehensive proposal to Nelson Mandela Bay Mayor, Councillor Babalwa Lobishe. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The plan includes measures such as regular Metro Police visits, a visitors\u2019 register, improved on-site security communication, CCTV installation, and priority repairs to perimeter fencing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reacting to the proposal, municipal spokesperson, Sithembiso Soyaya, emphasised a plan already in place to enhance security at the site. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Metro is committed to improving security at the Arlington Waste Disposal Site, ensuring both public safety and efficient waste management,\u201d Soyaya said. Despite this commitment, understaffing remains a challenge. While a recent risk assessment conducted by the Safety and Security Directorate suggested 13 armed personnel during the day, only seven unarmed security personnel are currently stationed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Security upgrades, which began on October 1 last year, include solid concrete fencing, gates, a security watchtower, and additional facilities for recyclers, although some elements are still in development. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The municipality stressed the importance of collaborative efforts between government, law enforcement, and the community to ensure safety. Soyaya revealed that Gqeberha police have advised residents to remain vigilant while visiting the site. This precaution is especially important in light of the recent fatal shooting of Heinrich and Tiaan Minnie. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To enhance security, Soyaya highlighted the role of shared responsibility across all sectors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEnsuring the safety and functionality of the Arlington Waste Disposal Site is not solely the municipality\u2019s responsibility. Businesses, law enforcement, and communities must work together to protect public infrastructure and improve service delivery.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Residents and businesses were encouraged to be vigilant of security risks and report suspicious activities. \u201cMeanwhile, the private sector can support by investing in waste management innovations and security solutions. The collaboration between the community, businesses, and the municipality aims to create a safer and more efficient waste management system for Nelson Mandela Bay. This shared effort is essential in addressing the security challenges facing the Arlington Waste Disposal Site and ensuring that such tragedies do not recur,\u201d Soyaya concluded. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
