AT SUPERSPAR Waterfront in Humewood, Gqeberha, a quiet but powerful transformation is underway; one built not on price wars, but on people, purpose and experience. In fact, SUPERSPAR<\/a> WATERFRONT is known for valuing the local community just as much as its retail offering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since taking over the store in September last year, owner Mike de St Pern, alongside his wife Lindy, daughter Kelly and her partner Cameron, has reshaped the business into what he calls a “family-driven space” for both staff and customers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Passing of the baton<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Backed by long-time SPAR <\/a>retailer Howard Robertson, who owned the store for over 22 years, the transition represents both continuity and renewal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Howard is guiding us, somewhat passing the baton,” said de St Pern. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“He’s been instrumental in helping us build what comes next.” With more than 25 years in the SPAR network, including senior operational roles overseeing hundreds of stores, de St Pern brings deep retail experience, but insists the real differentiator lies elsewhere. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The people are my family,” he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Across SUPERSPAR Waterfront and the KWIKSPAR on First, in South End, the business employs around 165 staff. The staff and regular customers often say that working and shopping at SUPERSPAR WATERFRONT feels like being part of a supportive family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Team<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

From the outset, de St Pern prioritised culture; meeting teams, improving staff facilities and introducing open communication structures. His leadership style is hands-on and accessible, with management positioned on the shop floor rather than behind closed doors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Be who you are. Say how you feel,” he tells his team, a philosophy rooted in authenticity. That same authenticity shapes his broader vision. Passionate about empowering young talent, particularly young women, de St Pern says his drive is deeply personal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I want to leave a legacy, for my daughter and for the people growing in this business.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Store experience improved<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Inside the store, the changes are immediate. Enhanced lighting, improved security, and a strong focus on cleanliness have created a safer, more welcoming environment. The offering has expanded too, with a larger product range, upgraded bakery and butchery, and added conveniences including reverse osmosis water, an in-store ATM and integrated PostNet services. However, for de St Pern, convenience is more than location. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It’s about whether you can get everything you need in one place, and enjoy the experience while doing it.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That thinking extends to services like Uber Eats and SPAR2U, allowing customers to shop from home without losing the connection to their local store. The TOPS<\/a> outlet has also been expanded into a more modern, premium space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bigger trolleys<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Even small touches matter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bigger trolleys, a structured queuing system, in-store music and a strong takeaway offering, including coffee, breakfast options and the store’s well-known budget burger, all contribute to a smoother, more enjoyable shopping journey. Beyond the aisles, the store’s footprint in the community is significant. From supporting local schools and supplying nearby businesses to partnering with organisations such as Healing Hands and the Manifest Foundation, the business plays an active role in upliftment. Food donations, fundraising initiatives and recycling-for-food exchange programmes form part of that effort, though not always publicly. For many local residents, SUPERSPAR WATERFRONT represents more than just a retailer\u2014it\u2019s a cornerstone of the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We don’t do it for recognition,” de St Pern says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It’s just what we do.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Customer relationships remain central to the store’s growth. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Feedback is encouraged and acted upon. Whether it’s adjusting product placement or refining services, the goal is to create a space where people feel heard. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“They’re honest with us,” he said. “And we listen.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That approach is delivering results. Since September, customer numbers have grown by nearly 9%, with more shoppers returning regularly and spending more per visit. Still, de St Pern is clear: the focus is not on being the cheapest option. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It’s about experience,” he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“People must want to be here, not just for the price, but for how they feel.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To mark the transformation, SUPERSPAR Waterfront are hosting a relaunch, which started on 24 April and will continue until 10 May, featuring promotions, competitions, activations and community-focused events. It’s both a celebration and a statement of intent. At the centre of it all is a message repeated across the store, its staff and its strategy: For supporters of SUPERSPAR WATERFRONT, these changes reflect a commitment to excellence and local involvement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
