GQEBERHA –<\/strong> Nelson Mandela University hosted one of four national onboarding workshops for Engen’s revamped Maths & Science Schools (EMSS) programme on 11 April, as the company rolled out a new blended learning model for the long-standing initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 11 April workshop at the university introduced local learners to a new blended learning approach that, according to Engen, promises to revolutionise how the programme supports academic achievement in Mathematics and Physical Sciences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gqeberha learners were among the first in the country to experience the programme’s evolution during the national onboarding workshops, which also took place simultaneously in Cape Town, Durban, and Johannesburg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the Gqeberha session, Grade 10 to 12 learners were officially introduced to EMSS’s new Learning Management System, gaining access to continuous educational content, structured assignments, and progress monitoring tools that will support their academic journey throughout the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new platform enables students to take ownership of their studies through self-paced learning while maintaining consistent engagement and support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 2025 EMSS matric cohort recorded a 97% overall pass rate and a 79% bachelor pass rate, results which Engen said highlight the impact of strong support, mentorship and learner commitment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Engen said the introduction of Artificial Intelligence and Entrepreneurship modules from next year will give Gqeberha learners in the EMSS programme a competitive edge, preparing them to lead in the future economy alongside their counterparts nationwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Engen CSI Manager Olwethu Mdabula expressed excitement about the new model: “We are truly energised by this next chapter for EMSS. The new blended learning platform represents a meaningful step forward, one that modernises how we deliver support while staying true to the heart of what EMSS has always been about.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transformation and Stakeholder Engagement Manager Simlindele Manqina emphasised the broader impact: “EMSS has been a cornerstone of Engen’s commitment to societal transformation, playing a crucial role in addressing critical skills shortages in maths and science, while empowering learners to unlock their full potential and pursue meaningful careers.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Gqeberha workshop equipped learners with an understanding of the programme’s structure, expectations, and support systems. Participants completed baseline assessments in Mathematics and Physical Sciences, received specialised study materials, and engaged with programme partners and STEM mentors who will guide them throughout their academic journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
