Melvyn Matthews, the Gqeberha-born songwriter and musician affectionately known as ‘Mr Weekend Special’, has passed away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Originally from Schauderville in the Northern Areas of Nelson Mandela Bay, he wrote and co-produced Weekend Special in 1983, the song that launched Brenda Fassie, MaBrrr, into global stardom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a statement released by the Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, he said Matthews helped shape the sound of township pop as we know it today. “Matthews was not only a gifted songwriter, but also a performer and storyteller whose work resonated across generations. He shared the stage with global legends and wrote for some of our most cherished artists, including Steve Kekana,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He also wrote the song ‘Life Is Going On’ for Brenda Fassie. In addition, Matthews served as a vocalist of CC Beat, the group that later became Dr Victor and the Rasta Rebels, and went on to build an extensive international performing career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His global appearances included touring with acclaimed American soul singer Percy Sledge and sharing the stage with legendary artists such as The Manhattans and Stevie Wonder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Most recently, we had the honour of having him serve as an adjudicator for the latest round of the Mzansi Golden Economy cultural funding programme, a role that reflected both the industry’s respect for him and our Department’s recognition of his lifetime contribution. His loss is therefore deeply personal to us,” McKenzie shared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He added that South Africa has a habit of celebrating its stars while overlooking the songwriters who made them shine. “Melvyn Matthews was one of those quiet giants, the man behind the song that helped the world fall in love with Brenda Fassie. That legacy belongs to all of us. To his family, loved ones, and many fans, I extend my heartfelt condolences. Hamba kahle, Melvyn.
