GQEBERHA <\/strong>– The case involving two individuals accused of kidnapping, extorting millions from, and attempting to human traffic an elderly woman in Kariega will face another postponement. After six months of delays due to ongoing investigations, the matter is now being postponed to allow for consultations between the two accused and their defence attorney.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ayabulela Busakwe and Andile Mathumbu face charges of kidnapping with intent to commit human trafficking, extortion and abduction. This follows the alleged kidnapping of the then 73-year-old Theresa Minnie from her Fairbridge Heights in Kariega home on the morning of 11 August 2025. The suspects allegedly demanded that her husband Karel pay R10 million for her safe return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sitting in the Gqeberha Regional Court today, 5 March 2026 in what was supposed to be the setting of a provisional trial date, the matter was postponed to allow defence attorneys to consult with their clients on how to move forward. This follows the defence receiving copies of the docket they requested in the previous court appearance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Busakwe, who is also involved in another high-profile case concerning the 2025 murder of State prosecutor Tracy Brown, has abandoned bail. Mathumbu’s bail application was denied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The two accused entered the dock with masks covering their faces. They looked back at the gallery as if they were looking for a familiar face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The State prosecutor noted that copies of the docket, mobile phone records and other evidence have been given to the attorney of one accused, with the other attorney to be provided with the documentation when they provide a USB drive to the State prosecutor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The State prosecutor also noted that the State is ready to proceed with the case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The matter was postponed until 31 March 2026. The accused will remain in custody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
