The mother of murdered Reeva Steenkamp has been diagnosed with Wernicke’s Aphasia following a stroke she suffered in September last year, according to an announcement from the Reeva Rebecca Steenkamp Foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
June Steenkamp was hospitalised after suffering the stroke on 1st September last year, which prompted an urgent appeal for financial assistance from the foundation established in memory of her daughter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Wernicke’s Aphasia is a complex language disorder that significantly affects communication abilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The foundation explained in their social media post that the condition is “characterised by impaired comprehension and fluent, yet often nonsensical speech.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Those affected typically remain unaware of their language difficulties and despite knowing what they wish to say, struggle to express themselves effectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Whilst Steenkamp remains physically capable, she requires continuous guidance and round-the-clock care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A particularly significant milestone was achieved recently when June referred to herself by name for the first time since her diagnosis\u2014a moment that has brought “hope, excitement and extreme joy” to her family and carers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“We continue to celebrate these small victories, remaining optimistic about the potential for further recovery of her speech and language function,” the foundation stated in their update.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The foundation further expressed that Steenkamp is currently thriving in a supportive environment, surrounded by caring individuals who provide her with peace, happiness and contentment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
