This year, why not celebrate Heritage Day (September 24) with something other than the ubiquitous braai!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We present six South African-inspired pizza recipes that celebrate our heritage and food culture in creative, tasty ways and which are guaranteed to surprise, delight and impress friends and family!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The <\/strong>Braai Meat Pizza<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ingredients<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1 pizza base (store-bought or homemade)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00bd cup tomato paste or passata<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1 cup mozzarella cheese<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00bd cup cheddar cheese<\/p>\n\n\n\n

100g boerewors, cooked and sliced<\/p>\n\n\n\n

100g bacon, cooked and sliced<\/p>\n\n\n\n

100g grilled steak or lamb, cooked and sliced<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00bd onion, caramelised<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00bc cup peppadews, sliced<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Optional: chakalaka sauce or BBQ sauce for drizzling<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instructions<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Preheat oven to 220\u00b0C. Spread tomato paste over the pizza base. Sprinkle mozzarella and cheddar evenly over the base. Top with sliced boerewors, steak, caramelised onion, and peppadews. Bake for 12 – 15 minutes or until cheese has melted. Drizzle over chakalaka or BBQ sauce before serving (optional).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Chakalaka Chicken Pizza<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ingredients<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1 pizza base<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00bc cup chakalaka (mild or hot), mixed with \u00bc cup tomato sauce<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1 cup shredded grilled chicken (seasoned with peri-peri or Cape Malay spice)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00bd cup cooked sweetcorn<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00bd onion, saut\u00e9ed<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00bc cup sliced red peppers<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1 cup mozzarella cheese<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fresh coriander to garnish<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instructions<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Preheat oven to 220\u00b0C. Spread chakalaka mix on the base. Add mozzarella, then layer chicken, sweetcorn, onions, and peppers. Bake for 12 – 15 minutes until golden. Garnish with coriander and serve hot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Bobotie Pizza<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ingredients<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1 pizza base<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2 tbsp Mrs Balls\u2019 apricot chutney<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1 cup bobotie-style curried mince<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00bd cup mozzarella<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00bc cup crumbled feta<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1 tbsp toasted almonds, sliced<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instructions<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Preheat oven to 220\u00b0C. Spread chutney over base. Add mince, then cheese and almonds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bake for 12 – 15 minutes. Serve warm with a side of atchar or sambals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Mzansi Veggie Pizza<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ingredients<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1 pizza base<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00bc cup butternut pur\u00e9e or beetroot hummus<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00bd cup roasted butternut cubes<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Handful baby spinach or morogo (blanched)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00bc cup mushrooms, saut\u00e9ed<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00bc cup feta cheese<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2 tbsp toasted pumpkin seeds<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instructions<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Preheat oven to 220\u00b0C. Spread butternut pur\u00e9e on the base. Layer veggies and sprinkle feta on top. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes. Top with pumpkin seeds and serve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Biltong & Blue Cheese Pizza<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ingredients<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1 pizza base<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2 tbsp olive oil<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1 clove garlic, minced<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1 cup mozzarella cheese<\/p>\n\n\n\n

50g sliced biltong<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00bc cup blue cheese, crumbled<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00bd onion, caramelised<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Handful rocket<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instructions<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Preheat oven to 220\u00b0C. Brush base with olive oil and garlic. Add mozzarella, biltong, blue cheese and onions. Bake for 12 – 15 minutes. Top with rocket after baking. Serve immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Milk Tart Dessert Pizza<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ingredients<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1 small pizza base or flatbread<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1 tbsp melted butter<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00bd cup milk tart custard (pre-cooked)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1 tsp cinnamon sugar<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Syrup (koeksister-style) for drizzling<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Toasted coconut (optional)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instructions<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
