Erasmus has clearly prioritized experience for the championship opener, with only three players in the 23-man squad possessing five Test caps or fewer. The inexperienced trio consists of utility forward Jan-Hendrik Wessels, wing Edwill van der Merwe, and prop Asenathi Ntlabakanye, who made his Test debut against Italy during the Castle Lager Incoming Series in July.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The front row sees the return of the formidable combination of props Ox Nche and Wilco Louw alongside hooker Malcolm Marx, with Etzebeth and Lood de Jager providing the engine room expertise that has become synonymous with Springbok forward dominance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Erasmus has opted for a five-three split on the bench, with impact forwards Bongi Mbonambi, Wessels, Ntlabakanye, Franco Mostert, and Kwagga Smith joined by backs Cobus Reinach, Canan Moodie, and utility player Damian Willemse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coach confident in selection<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve been experimenting with player combinations during the Castle Lager Incoming Series and at our conditioning camp in the last two weeks, and we believe this team will allow us to play the type of rugby we want to play against Australia,\u201d Erasmus explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The coach acknowledged the threat posed by a resurgent Australian side coming off confidence-boosting performances against the British & Irish Lions, including a morale-lifting 22-12 victory after a heartbreaking 29-26 defeat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAustralia showed that they are on the right trajectory in their last two matches against the British & Irish Lions, and we have no doubt they will enter this match with confidence,\u201d Erasmus warned. \u201cThey are a physical and well-coached team, and we\u2019ll certainly not underestimate how much those performances will inspire them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Regarding the absence of star wing Cheslin Kolbe, Erasmus revealed the player has recovered from a recent niggle but was held back as a precautionary measure. \u201cCheslin has also recovered from a niggle and trained with us last week, but we decided to exercise caution and give him extra time at training before selecting him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

De Allende\u2019s back problem opened the door for Esterhuizen\u2019s return, with Erasmus expressing confidence in the experienced center\u2019s ability to deliver alongside Kriel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Championship defense begins<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe believe our two-week conditioning camp has placed us in the right frame of mind for the Castle Lager Rugby Championship. So hopefully we can transfer that hard work into our game to place ourselves in a good position to defend the title,\u201d the coach concluded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
