What is a wingman? It\u2019s that one person who knows you at your best and worst. The one who encourages you to follow your heart, but also tells you straight when you\u2019re losing your mind. Someone honest, loyal and always there when things get tough. For Ruan Smith, that someone isn\u2019t just a friend \u2013 it\u2019s his identical twin brother, JP Smith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the new season of kykNET\u2019s popular reality series Op My Eish!<\/em>, JP stands by his brother as a confidant and sounding board while Ruan searches for love in front of the cameras.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s an absolute honour \u2013 it\u2019s awesome,\u201d says JP. \u201cWe\u2019re incredibly close and know each other well. It\u2019s a new challenge for me. So, it\u2019s going to be interesting. Ruan and I have been through a lot together \u2013 through the tough times and the good. So, I know what\u2019s best for him. I\u2019m going to be honest as always. I have his best interests at heart.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The two brothers not only share a close bond, but also an impressive history on the rugby field. JP has played for teams such as Western Province (2010), the Brumbies (2014\u20132015), Canberra Vikings, the Stormers (2016), the Reds (2018\u20132020), LA Giltinis (2021) and the Lions (2021\u20132024). He and Ruan have played together for the Brumbies, Reds and Lions, among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These days, the twins co-run a rugby clinic called Eight7, where they focus on developing young talent. JP knows exactly what Ruan is looking for at this stage of his life: stability, sincerity and someone who is comfortable with simplicity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cRuan is looking for someone who is easy-going \u2013 not someone who always has to be on the go or busy. In our careers, we were incredibly busy and had very little time for ourselves. So, someone who values time at home is important to him. He\u2019s not looking for a high-maintenance personality \u2013 just someone who\u2019s comfortable with the normal, quiet moments.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But it\u2019s not just about comfort. JP believes Ruan needs a partner who is both independent and family oriented. \u201cHe doesn\u2019t want someone who expects him to do everything. A relationship is about building together \u2013 not just giving in one direction. Yes, it\u2019s important for a man to play his part, but it has to be mutual.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When asked how he will know when Ruan is truly in love, JP answers without hesitation: \u201cIf he makes sacrifices in his daily life for someone, then you know it\u2019s serious. He doesn\u2019t give up that part of himself easily. So, if he starts to adapt for someone, it means a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cRuan is actually a very gentle guy,\u201d says JP. \u201cHe puts his guard up, especially in new relationships, but when you get to know him, he\u2019s an incredibly loyal, caring person. I hope people see that side of him in the series \u2013 not just the strong rugby player, but the big teddy bear he really is.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And if you\u2019re worried you\u2019ll confuse the two on screen?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re very similar, but our personalities are slightly different. You\u2019ll start to notice that. And if there\u2019s any confusion \u2013 I\u2019m the smarter one,\u201d JP adds with a laugh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He believes Op my eish!<\/em> is a unique opportunity for his brother: \u201cIn today\u2019s world, everyone\u2019s so busy that it\u2019s getting harder and harder to find love in a natural way. This series gives him the chance to open himself up, to try again. And if I can be a small part of that journey, then I\u2019m there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
