The Nelson Mandela Bay (NMB) Municipality has confirmed that Kings Beach remains closed to the public as contractors are working with urgency to address a sewage spill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Last week the PE Express reported on the cancellation of the popular PE Hobie Beach Parkrun on Saturday July 5 due to an alleged \u201criver\u201d of sewage along the route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At the time organisers of the event described the sewage spill, on a social media post, as a six to eight metres wide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cUnfortunately, there is a big sewage leak on our beach route towards the harbour wall,\u201d the post read. \u201cThe matter has been reported to the municipality as it\u2019s clearly a huge infrastructure failure.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a statement yesterday, Monday 7 July, the NMB Municipality said Kings Beach would remain closed as a precautionary and environmentally responsible measure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOver the weekend, the municipality, through its appointed contractor, undertook critical efforts to locate the source of the spillage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis task was made difficult by the presence of swampy terrain, overgrown vegetation, and dense trees in the area.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the municipality, contractors will continue to dose the affected areas to reduce E. coli levels and neutralise unpleasant odours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis is part of our commitment to restoring the natural environment in and around Kings Beach as quickly and effectively as possible.
